The United States Gypsum Company (USG) is renowned for its manufacturing of gypsum-based products and ceiling suspension systems that are mostly used in the construction trade. Between 1920 and 1978 some of the products produced by USG contained asbestos. Workers in the construction industry and other trades who worked with or in the surrounding areas of these products were at risk for developing asbestos related diseases like mesothelioma. This exposure risk happened as a result of workers breathing in asbestos fibers that became suspended in the air during the building and construction process. As a result, a significant number of lawsuits were brought against the United States Gypsum Company and USG was forced to declare Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2001 in an effort to thwart escalating litigation expenses. In 2006, the asbestos personal injury settlement trust was established as part of a Joint Plan of Reorganization for coming out of Chapter 11 Bankruptcy.
