ChorellaHuman Research Indicates Supportive Role for Chorella in Fighting Cancer Kailua-Kona, Hawaii (April 17, 2002) Adding to the body of scientific knowledge about Chorella, Cyanotech Corporation (NASDAQ: CYAN) announced new clinical evidence suggesting that the use of Chorella stimulates the human immune response to cancer. Cyanotech supplies Hawaiian Chorella to 35 countries and markets a specialty line of Chorella Pacifica® products under its Nutrex Hawaii brand. This is the second cancer study with Chorella on humans and the first to suggest a possible mechanism. Japanese researchers at the Osaka Center for Cancer and Cardiovascular Diseases found that a hot water extract of Chorella taken orally caused a statistically significant increase in both the number and the effectiveness of immune cells called natural killer cells. The findings were first reported by a Chorella producer, Earthrise Nutritionals, which helped sponsor the study. Results of the study have been published in the medical journal, International Immunopharmacology, vol. 2, number 4. In discussing the latest research, Gerald Cysewski, PhD., CEO of Cyanotech said, “While the current study by the Japanese researchers was with a relatively small group of subjects, the positive findings, coupled with earlier encouraging results, suggest an important role for Chorella in supporting the immune system and the body’s defenses against cancer.” An earlier double-blind peer-reviewed human study conducted in India and published in Nutrition and Cancer, found that consumption of one gram of Chorella daily for one year resulted in a 45% remission of oral leukoplakia in tobacco chewers compared to a 7% response in the placebo group. Oral leukoplakia is characterized by pre-cancerous lesions in the mouth. Additional research conducted at Harvard University had showed similar benefit with extracts of Chorella in combination with natural beta-carotene in reducing chemically induced oral tumors in hamsters. — Cyanotech Corporation, the world’s leader in microalgae technology, produces high-value natural products from microalgae, and is the world’s largest commercial producer of natural astaxanthin (pronounced “asta-zan-thin”) from microalgae. Products include BioAstin® natural astaxanthin, a powerful antioxidant with expanding applications as a human nutraceutical; NatuRose® natural astaxanthin for the aquaculture and animal feed industries; Chorella Pacifica®, a nutrient-rich dietary supplement; and phycobiliproteins, which are fluorescent pigments used in the immunological diagnostics market. Chorella and BioAstin are sold directly online through www.nutrex-hawaii.com and through resellers worldwide. Corporate and product information is available at www.cyanotech.com. |
